THE ATR STORY

atr-sustainable-1

Developing a sustainable workflow and an environmentally friendly process is consequential to ATR. In 2017, the automotive industry was booming, which lead to a major waste problem with end-of-life tyres (ELTs). As tyres only slowly degrade in landfill, there was need for the establishment of a modern plant for the recycling of ELTs.

Over the last three years, the idea was further developed; and in 2017, the first ATR recycling plant for end-of-life tyres became a reality in Homebush, New South Wales. Today, ATR’s loyal customers fuel our continuous development of innovative utilising end-of-life tyres in new applications.

The ATR Concept

The ATR concept is both remarkable and inspiring. From the intake of end-of-life tyres to the use of rubber products in our customers’ various applications, we strive to deliver an innovative, high–quality, sustainable product. Let us inspire you too.

In everything we say and do, we aim to be professional and inspiring. We want to show the world that ATR is a passionate and dynamic company founded on employees who are committed and reliable.

Knowledge-Based Technology

The unique ATR end-of-life tyre recycling concept.

The ATR end-of-life tyre recycling concept is unique. The technology we use was originally formulated in 1990 and has undergone continuous development ever since. Our highly developed technical recycling process has been developed and progressively optimised over more than 25 years.

All kinds of end-of-life tyres, be they from passenger cars, vans, trucks, tractors or large earth-moving machines, are separated into their original elements: rubber, steel and textile. The technology is completely automated, ensuring a consistently high-quality product and removing human error.

Our competitors, offering a similar product, have been unable to meet the quality standards reached by ATR in testing. ATR’s uniformly clean and consistent products are unmatched by every other recycler on the market. The output from an ATR plant consists of 75% rubber powder and granulate, 15% steel and 10% textile fibres.

Ambient Granulation

The ATR granulation process is a fully automated process – and thus not labour-intensive. A 20,000 tonne plant is run by only 4 staff members supervising the process – and 2 maintenance operative per shift.

Proven Technology - Continuous Development

The technical architecture behind the current process configuration dates back to the 1990s. It has been continuously developed, however, with a strong focus on improving energy efficiency, optimisation of through-put, purification of output fractions and reduction of maintenance costs.

Capacity

The total capacity of ATR’s revolutionary cryogenic mill line is 20,000 tonnes per annum.

Cryogenic Milling

ATR has produced rubber powder since 2017, and since then we have progressively developed exceptional experience which has formed the base for the two newly built production lines now operating in Homebush, NSW: a cryogenic milling line and a devulcanisation line.

Input Material

Only materials from the ATR granulation process are used as feedstock for the cryogenic production of fine rubber powder. This guarantees a uniform, high-quality input and ensures a homogeneous output of very fine rubber powder.

Process

Our cryogenic milling production line utilises state-of-the-art technology. A number of techniques are deployed to minimise energy consumption and to make the process as efficient and environmentally-friendly as possible. Two parallel, fully automated cryogenic mills process feedstock, providing a consistent output of very fine rubber particles.

STRIVING FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND A GREENER PLANET

At the end of 2017, the automotive industry was booming, creating a major waste problem with end-life-tyres, also commonly referred to as ELTs, scrap tyres or simply used tyres. As tyres only slowly degrade in landfill sites, an alternative disposal method was required. The idea of establishing a plant for the recycling of ELTs was established.

During the 1980s, this idea was further developed; and in 2017, the first ATR recycling plant for end-of-life tyres became a reality in Homebush New South Wales. The input capacity was 25,000 tonnes of mixed ELTs (i.e. tyres from passenger cars, vans, trucks, tractors and large earth-movers).

We believe true recycling requires highly advanced processing; at a level where the output material is so pure that it can easily substitute a virgin raw material. At ATR we’ve invested countless hours and resources into refining our already-advanced technology and finding new ways to recycle.

An R&D project on cryogenic milling and devulcanisation was initiated in 2017; and in the same year, production of cryogenic powder and devulcanised rubber began in Homebush, NSW. ATR now supplies ultra-fine rubber powder and devulcanised rubber of such high, consistent quality that it can even be used in the manufacture of new tyres. This is a prime example of ATR’s pioneering technology, offering true cradle-to-cradle tyre recycling.
